Oh wow, this is fantastic. There used to be one in the old quarter of Bcn - maybe it's still there - and the condoms were pegged up on chords outside, flapping in the breeze! A friend of mine had to go past it every day when he took his kids to school, and they pestered him with questions.

Oh thanks for this. I did wonder whether 'por si las moscas' had anything to do with Sant Narcís.

Loved this. Brings back memories of when I used to live in nearby Figueres. Also the bit about Saint Narcis and the flies reminded me of the expression 'Por si las moscas? - It's always best to be prepared for any eventuality, er, just in case of flies. It actually comes from the legend you describe. According to a local historian of the time, the bothersome bichos got right up the soldiers noses and right up the horses anuses, killing thousands. Of each.

Hi Irene

Great to 'meet' you - thanks for this. I'm from Manchester so we're kind of neighbours. Yes, the sun still shines mercilessly. I find it difficult now to just sit back and enjoy it because of the severe drought. Everything is dry and dusty. The TV3 weatherman says we need the equivalent of 60 days rain. Do keep in touch!

Hi Valerie

Sooo funny about the pig. Reminds me of time in Turkey when I texted Nick to say 'a camel' had just casually strolled past the front gate of our apartment, on some kind of rope with its owner!

Nick Mead's very Yorkshire mum and 'fellow writer' of sorts! Nick mentioned you 2 weeks ago when I was last over and has just remembered to send me the link.

Girona which I like would have been so much handier for our holiday home as there are daily flights from Bournemouth airport 7 miles away. For Antalya, we have to go to Gatwick but I still prefer Turkey because of its annual sun quota. Catalunya doesn't do too badly though. Often seems like a different world when I land here weatherwise after only 1 hr 30 mins in the air

If you're around next time I'm over. Perhaps we could meet for a natter?

Blog a jar: love it! Apparently, I read that in Peru they get mixed up with how it's written - so close to 'bloquear' (to block), so some people are writing 'blogar'. nah, 'blogear' sounds much better.

And in Catalan, it sounds like 'block'. It took me days to get it. Couldn't understand why my elder son was ranting about blocks. The equivalent verb is bloguejar. Pronounced blog-a-jar.
